Silent Dust – Listen to the Night [none60 Records]

Silent Dust - Listen to the Night [none60 Records]

The new album from Silent Dust has finally arrived – seven years after the last one – and it’s another deep dive into the bass music cosmos.

Silent Dust, who run none60 Records, give drum & bass a slightly reduced role on Listen to the Night, instead moving through experimental half-time and atmospheric quasi-trip-hop on the way to painting in a new colour over the course of some six collaborations with vocalists – including DRS, Terror and SelfSays – which introduce hip-hop elements into an already intoxicating Silent Dust mix.

Chilling on the Couch .03 [Scientific Records]

Chilling on the Couch .03 [Scientific Records]

Pulling together 15 glacial tracks from the likes of Bungle, Mav, Parheila and Eissi, Scientific Records are back with another Chilling on the Couch compilation.

The Dutch label is no stranger to dishing out 170bpm massages for the brain and it’s another stellar selection here, each track a deep dive into oceanic bass swells flecked with atmospheric sonics and downtempo beats to blur the lines between drum & bass and trip hop.

The Chilling on the Couch .03 LP dropped on 7 September – head to www.scientificrecords.bandcamp.com to buy, and listen below.

Lynx ft Master X – Deep Deadly [Detail Recordings]

Lynx ft Master X – Deep Deadly [Detail Recordings]

Lynx isn’t messing about on latest track ‘Deep Deadly’ which brings drum & bass back to everything it should be – no racing stripes here, just straight up power and punch.

With Master X on board delivering a timeless drum & bass vocal, Lynx sets his sights on the sort of infectious old school vibe which makes Jonny L’s ‘Back to Your Roots’ such a classic track – a devastatingly simple bassline, and one tailor-made for DJs.

Lynx explains “When writing the track and arranging it I wanted a song that DJs could splice their own favourite version of the track together. For exampled, you could re-edit the arrangement as a deep minimal DJ and lose the heavier sections. Or, if you prefer it to be a banger, you could lose the minimal parts.

“Or if you feel like it just loop the vocal and double drop your favourite tune over the top. It’s a very versatile DJ tool and a tune I think DJs will have loads of fun mixing.”

‘Deep Deadly’ is out now on Detail Recordings.

Wagz – ‘Whiplash’ / ‘Grey & Blue Skies’ [none60 Records]

Wagz - ‘Whiplash’ / ‘Grey & Blue Skies’ [none60 Records]

Wagz returns for round two on Silent Dust’s none60 Records imprint with new single ‘Whiplash’ / ‘Grey & Blue Skies’.

‘Whiplash’ is a real damager, slowly ramping up the tension with airy percussion and misty pads before dropping into tough, plunging basslines. But this script is shredded on the flip, where ‘Grey & Blue Skies’ takes to its wings on a delicate liquid roller; the sub sounds remain, but they massage your brain rather than landing punches between your eyes.

Kusp – ‘Moments’ ft Edward Oberon / ‘Shadowed’ [Detail Recordings]

b2287cd8c456b892d2fee8b9ae166376d1ec9bf4Kusp drops the first Detail Recordings release not to come from the studio of label owner Lynx – and the result is a shapeshifting double-punch.

Liquid roller ‘Moments’ kicks things off, Edward Oberon’s soulful vocals pushing through pinpoint arpeggios and soaring melodies, before things take an unexpected and wonderful turn on the flip.

‘Shadowed’ is an angular, heavyweight half-time cut which takes no prisoners with solid square-wave bass frequencies and bruising percussion – it’s a totally different flavour to ‘Moments’, and simply shows that it’s futile trying to predict the sound of Kusp’s LP, scheduled to drop on Detail Recordings later this year.

Dissident – Apnoea/Anabasis ft. Nordub & Dissociative [none60]

Dissident - Apnoea/Anabasis [none60]

Dissident gets deep and dark on his none60 debut, Apnoea/Anabasis.

A-side ‘Apnoea’ prowls over an oppressive, pounding sub for the minimal drum & bass equivalent of a psychological horror flick while on the flip things brighten substantially as the producer teams up with Nordub and Dissociative to flirt with daylight after a stint plumbing the depths.

Silent Dust’s none60 imprint is no stranger to the atmospheric, more experimental side of the genre and Dissident’s release slots right in there amongst the likes of Lewis James, The Corpus, Ethos and of course the duo at the label’s helm.

MVRK – Dots [Pseudoscience Recordings]

MVRK - Dots EP [Pseudoscience Recordings]

Hungarian drum & bass producer MVRK muscles his way onto Hybris’s Pseudoscience Recordings imprint, which releases a record not put together by its head honcho for the first time.

Dots by MVRK is the third release, and the first not to come from Hybris – and the label boss has explained the reasoning behind his decision. He said: When I started Pseudoscience, I wasn’t in a rush to sign other artists, as I only want to release music that I feel absolutely confident about, and I’m a picky bastard.

“But upon first listen to Voyage (on my phone speaker) I told MVRK to lock it down, and the rest of the EP soon followed. MVRK is an exceptional talent from Budapest, who perfectly represents the Pseudoscience sound, and I’m extremely proud to present his debut EP on the label.“

Broadly speaking Dots is a neurofunk workout, but the sheer variety of sounds and arrangements warrants its own genre tag – ‘Voyage’ is sheer chaos, punishing synths running amok over erratic drum hits, while ‘Energizer’ retains the neuro muscle over a madly swung beat.

The title track rips over razor-sharp percussion and the record closes on the nuclear soundscape of ‘Ghost Circuit’, a borderline terrifying track dripping in atmospheric pads and menacing bass.

Quentin Hiatus – I’m Neither Quentin Nor Hiatus Vol. 4 [Free Love Digi]

Quentin Hiatus - I'm Neither Quentin Nor Hiatus Vol. 4 [Free Love Digi]

Quentin Hiatus is back with more intergalactic goodness with the fourth instalment of his I’m Neither Quentin Nor Hiatus series, doing for drum & bass what NASA did for Neil Armstrong.

From the robotic warmth of ‘To Be Red’ to the full-bodied half-time roller ‘Electro Dynamics’ through more conventional break-led cuts like ‘Unstable Crystal’ and ‘Sense of Loss’ the seven-track record charts a course way out past Pluto, with warm synth washes from Mercury mornings and rumbling basslines from Jupiter’s raging red spot.

Urban Wildlife Vol. 3 [Urban Wildlife]

Urban Wildlife Vol. 3 [Urban Wildlife]

Back once again with the ill behaviour, Urban Wildlife have dropped volume three in their heavyweight drum & bass compilation series.

Producers from all corners of the globe lay down beefy cuts of 175bpm goodness representing every shade of the genre which Urban Wildlife exists to serve. Tearout jump-up rubs shoulders with molten gold liquid, straight-up nastiness goes hand in hand with clean-cut vocals – if there’s a more detailed, better curated 24-track compilation going, we are yet to see it.
